Termites cause more damage to Australian homes than fires, floods and storms combined, and most home insurance policies do not cover it. Because subterranean termites work hidden inside timber, the damage is often well advanced before it is noticed. These are the warning signs Sydney homeowners should watch for.
1. Mud tubes (leads)
Termites build thin mud tunnels along foundations, piers and walls to travel between the soil and your timber. Never break them open: this can push the colony elsewhere in the house.
2. Hollow or soft timber
Tap skirting boards, door frames and window frames. If they sound hollow or a screwdriver goes in easily, termites may be eating them from the inside.
3. Doors and windows that suddenly stick
Termite activity creates moisture that can make frames swell and warp.
4. Bubbling paint or tracks in plaster
Fine lines or blistering paint on walls can hide termite workings behind the surface.
5. Discarded wings
After warm, humid evenings in spring and summer, flying termites (alates) shed their wings near windows and lights.
6. Clicking sounds in walls
Soldier termites bang their heads against timber when disturbed, making a faint clicking noise.
7. Mounds or damaged garden timber
Old stumps, sleepers and fences close to the house are common nesting points.
What to do next
We recommend a pest inspection at least once a year. If you notice any of these signs, leave the area undisturbed and book a professional pest inspection.
